Despite being incredibly dangerous and potentially hazardous to health, asbestos gaskets offered excellent high temperature resistance. After use of the material was made illegal, there was a need for products that could provide the same properties. This led to the creation of a range of non asbestos gaskets, which could preform the same function without posing danger to the people around them. These new, non asbestos gaskets utilise a aramid fibre (Kevlar) base mixed with and non-organic fibres. This material is then blended with a variety of different polymers to achieve certain results.
A common example of this is the addition of Nitrile rubber, which grants the gaskets excellent fuel and oil resistance. Other popular combinations include PTFE for superior chemical resistance, EPDM for potable water applications and graphite coating for non-stick and steam resistance.
