Product Description

Our fabric reinforced seals provide a durable, high-performance sealing solution for demanding industrial, hydraulic and pneumatic applications. Manufactured by combining elastomeric compounds with internal fabric reinforcement, these seals offer enhanced mechanical strength, dimensional stability and resistance to wear compared with conventional unreinforced rubber seals.

The reinforced construction typically incorporates layers of cotton, polyester, nylon or specialist technical fabrics bonded to rubber compounds such as nitrile (NBR), neoprene (CR) or other suitable elastomers. This combination provides the flexibility required for effective sealing while helping the component maintain its shape under compression, pressure and repeated mechanical movement.

Fabric reinforced rubber seals are particularly suitable for applications involving high mechanical loads, abrasive conditions and demanding operating environments. The reinforcing layers help resist extrusion, tearing and deformation, making these seals useful in hydraulic cylinders, industrial machinery, heavy-duty shaft sealing systems and specialist equipment.

We supply fabric reinforced rubber seals in a range of profiles, sizes and material combinations to suit specific operating requirements. Bespoke seals can also be manufactured to customer drawings, samples or technical specifications, with material selection based on pressure, temperature, chemical compatibility and operating conditions.

Fabric Reinforced Seal Construction

Fabric reinforced seals combine the flexibility and sealing properties of rubber with the mechanical strength of textile reinforcement. The fabric layers are embedded within or bonded to the elastomer to create a composite structure capable of resisting demanding mechanical loads.

Depending on the application, reinforcement can be incorporated throughout the seal or positioned in specific areas to improve structural support. This helps reduce distortion, improve resistance to extrusion and maintain sealing performance under repeated compression or movement.

The type of rubber compound, fabric reinforcement and seal profile can be selected to suit the intended operating environment.

Rubber Compounds & Reinforcing Fabrics

Different rubber compounds and reinforcing fabrics can be combined to achieve the required balance of flexibility, strength, chemical resistance and temperature performance.

Rubber Compounds

Material
Key Properties
Nitrile Rubber (NBR)
Good resistance to mineral oils and hydraulic fluids for industrial sealing applications.
Neoprene Rubber (CR)
Good mechanical durability with resistance to weathering and selected oils.
Silicone Rubber
Excellent flexibility across a wide temperature range, with good resistance to ozone, weathering and temperature extremes.
EPDM Rubber
Excellent resistance to weathering, ozone, water and selected chemicals.
SBR Rubber
Good abrasion resistance and mechanical durability for general-purpose sealing applications where oil resistance is not required..
FKM Rubber
High-temperature resistance and compatibility with many oils and chemicals.

Reinforcing Fabrics

Material
Key Properties
Cotton
Flexible reinforcement for traditional fabric-reinforced rubber seals and packings.
Polyester
Good tensile strength, dimensional stability and abrasion resistance.
Nylon
High strength, flexibility and resistance to repeated mechanical movement.
Aramid (Kevlar®)
High tensile strength and resistance to demanding mechanical loads.
Meta-Aramid (Nomex®)
Good thermal stability for selected high-temperature applications.

Material combinations and availability depend on the seal design and intended operating conditions.

Types of Fabric Reinforced Seals

Fabric reinforcement can be incorporated into several industrial seal designs, depending on the required movement, pressure and sealing arrangement.

Hydraulic Piston & Rod Seals

Fabric reinforced piston and rod seals provide additional structural support in hydraulic systems exposed to pressure and repeated movement. Reinforcement is commonly used in selected U-cup seals, V-packings and multi-part sealing assemblies.

V-Packing & Chevron Seals

Fabric reinforced V-packing seals use multiple sealing rings arranged in a stack to provide effective sealing in reciprocating applications. The reinforced construction helps the rings retain their profile and resist extrusion under pressure.

Rotary Shaft Seals

Selected heavy-duty rotary shaft seals incorporate fabric reinforcement to improve mechanical stability and durability. Split seal constructions may also be available for applications where equipment dismantling is difficult.

Reinforced Rubber Gaskets & Strips

Fabric reinforced rubber gaskets and strips provide additional strength and dimensional stability for industrial sealing applications, including machinery, gates, flanges and equipment requiring resistance to mechanical deformation.

Bespoke Fabric Reinforced Seal Manufacturing

We can supply bespoke fabric reinforced seals manufactured to suit specific machinery, operating conditions and installation requirements.

Custom designs can incorporate different rubber compounds, fabric reinforcement types and seal profiles to achieve the required mechanical strength, flexibility and sealing performance.

Seals can be specified using technical drawings, CAD files, existing samples or detailed dimensional requirements. Our team can assist with material selection based on operating pressure, temperature, movement, fluid compatibility and environmental conditions.

FAQs

What are fabric reinforced seals?

Fabric reinforced seals are composite sealing components manufactured using rubber compounds combined with layers of textile reinforcement. The fabric provides additional mechanical strength and dimensional stability, helping the seal resist deformation, wear and extrusion.

What are the benefits of fabric reinforced seals compared with standard rubber seals?

Fabric reinforcement can improve tensile strength, tear resistance, dimensional stability and resistance to extrusion. These properties make reinforced seals particularly useful in applications involving high mechanical loads, pressure and repeated movement.

Can fabric reinforced seals be manufactured to custom specifications?

Yes. Fabric reinforced seals can be supplied in bespoke sizes, profiles and material combinations to suit specific industrial applications. Technical drawings, existing samples or detailed operating requirements can be used to help identify a suitable construction.
