Product Description
The Rubber Company exclusively designs and manufactures RubbaGrass® matting to deliver outstanding safety and durability. RubbaGrass® is a simple and affordable way to make natural grass surfaces safer. It works well in playgrounds, activity centers, parks, golf courses, and other public spaces.
We supply our grass matting in two standard thicknesses, with 22mm being the most popular option. Experts suggest this thickness for fall height protection as it provides good impact absorption for safer outdoor areas.
As the name suggests, people primarily use RubbaGrass® on grass surfaces as they are strong and versatile. However, this also makes them suitable for many other environments. These include ice rinks, ski slopes, walkways, events, bars, kitchens, and temporary ground protection.
RubbaGrass® mats offer fall protection and great slip resistance. They also provide comfort to reduce fatigue. They help drain wet areas and spills and provide effective ground reinforcement.
A key feature of RubbaGrass® grass matting is its unique open-hole design. This allows rainwater to drain quickly while also enabling grass to grow naturally through the mat. Over time, the grass blends with the surface, making the mats almost invisible. This makes them ideal for locations where maintaining a natural appearance is important.
RubbaGrass® performs reliably in all weather conditions. Unlike PVC alternatives that can become brittle in cold temperatures, rubber maintains its flexibility and strength year-round. This ensures consistent safety performance in both hot and cold climates.
Superb Safety Surfacing
Another major advantage of RubbaGrass® is the excellent critical fall height performance. This makes it a popular and cost-effective safety surface for playgrounds and outdoor play equipment. Play frames, swings, and slides can pose risks if children fall, but impact-absorbing grass matting helps reduce injury by cushioning falls through compression.
This graph provides the results of HIC fall height testing to BS EN 1177:2018 on concrete, grass and then on both with the use of RubbaGrass®. This explains how to achieve the fall height and how to use it as a base layer for other systems. Critical fall height refers to the distance a child can fall without risk of serious injury. Larger play equipment needs a higher critical fall height to prevent potential hazards.

Useful Additions
We also offer a number of ground protection and reinforcement products which are fully compatible with our RubbaGrass® safety mats.
Ground Reinforcement Mesh:
You can easily install our Grasshield® ground reinforcement mesh under the rubber grass mats to provide additional strength and stability. This product is particularly useful on soil which is prone to becoming waterlogged. You can also use this product in areas which receive high levels of footfall to protect against soil erosion.
Fixing Pegs and Ties:
We always suggest installing our RubbaGrass® safety mats using our secure barbed plastic pegs that will sit inside the holes of the mat. This ensures that the matting remains in place during periods of heavy footfall and adverse weather conditions. We advise using between 4-8 pegs per mat around the outer perimeter of the matting as standard. We also offer a heavy duty metal version which can be installed using drill and chuck, ideal for harder ground conditions.
